Calendar Connections
are brightly colored calendar pieces which are added daily to a blank
calendar. The pieces, developed for a heterogeneous population,
range from simple, linear patterns to complex, cyclical patterns.
Students observe the pieces carefully and through interaction with
their peers make hypotheses about patterns, test them over time, and
decide whether or not their hypotheses are correct. The variety
and complexity of patterns and the richness of colors and designs make
Calendar Connections unique. Finding the various patterns
encourages students to develop their observation skills and critical
thinking skills while reinforcing curricular themes in math, science,
social studies, and character education. The calendar is
actually a vehicle for the calendar pieces which integrate curricular
areas; they span cultures and developmental levels.
Each piece is laminated for
durability, and since only the number of the day is labeled (no
holidays or occasions marked on them), they can be used year after
year. The sets contain thirty-one pieces for use in any month.
Teachers who have used them in their classrooms have found them to be
fun and challenging. |
